Grab your belongings from the hotel and head down four hours to the Santa Rosa area. It’s a steep drop from the road down to the road but a beautiful place to walk and the road view is pretty stunning.

The hike down to see the Tall Trees requires an access code that you can get at any ranger station. The Bluff trail will give you views of the coast. The Prairie Creek area is amazing for seeing the tall trees and you can piece together short and long hikes. Where to stay: Holiday Inn Express, Redwood National Parkĭay Five: While you leave your belongings in the security of your hotel room, do some hiking throughout the park. There are no restaurants in the park so eat a big meal and pick up sundries at a grocery store to have a light dinner in the park. Our most favorite fish and chips to date have been at the North Coast grill, located along the shore in Crescent, City, CA, and just north of the park. You might stop in Bandon or along other coastal areas for views and hiking while you are along the Oregon coast. Where to stay: Yachats, OR (we found the Drift Inn to be perfectly adequate and the price for a coastal view probably can’t be beat).ĭay Four: From Yachats, drive four hours south to Crescent City, CA, where you’ll enter the Redwood National and State Park system. The hike from Heceta to Hobbit Beach is lovely and the views from the coastline there are among the best.

We spent our two days in this area seeking out short coastal strolls and other forest walks. This tiny coastal town is near some of our favorite hiking at Heceta Head, including the Hobbit Trail, as well as Cape Perpetual where you will find Thor’s Well and the Spouting Horn.

Tasty menu items, free samples of cheese, and some of our favorite ice cream. We recommend you add a trip to the Tillamook Cheese factory in your outing. You might find some hiking in the mountains headed across. As long as we had a warm room and internet each night, I was able to stay quite productive while Kelly edited photos and videos from our day’s adventures.ĭays Two and Three: From Portland, drive west toward the coast. Traveling in the winter during shorter days was perfect because I was still spending a lot of time working every day (holding virtual office hours, writing manuscripts, mentoring students). A key goal of this trip (aside from avoiding two cross-country flights) was to pick up Pinnacles National Park. We did the trip in the winter and had a surprisingly lovely time but we have also visited the Oregon Coast, Yosemite, and Redwood National Parks in summer, when more people have time to travel for this long. With this itinerary, we suggest how you might spend twelve days from Portland, Oregon down to San Francisco, CA (reverse the itinerary to drive north). A conference in Portland and then another in San Francisco bookended a very fun but strange trip. And this past year we had a big doozy in the winter. We like to build itineraries around trips we’ve actually done.
